Shortly before the vaccination summit with Chancellor Angela Merkel, there was movement in the EU conflict with the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.

According to the EU, the company wants to deliver more vaccine to the European Union in the first quarter than announced.

There would be nine million cans, so there would be a total of 40 million cans, said EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen.

That is half of the originally targeted amount of 80 million cans.

EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides spoke of good news and a step forward.

The vaccine manufacturer Biontech will also be able to deliver more vaccine to the EU soon - possibly up to 75 million additional doses of its vaccine in the second quarter.

The Mainz company announced this on Monday morning.

"We are continuing to work on increasing deliveries from the week of February 15th to ensure the contractually agreed delivery of the full amount of vaccine doses in the first quarter," said Biontech CFO Sierk Poetting as quoted in the statement.

"We could also deliver up to 75 million more cans to the European Union in the second quarter."

The measures to expand production capacities went according to plan, explained Poetting.

In February, with the opening of a new Biontech branch in Marburg, the production of the vaccine is to be increased.

There it should be possible to produce up to 750 million vaccine doses a year.
