On January 31, in response to the question of "whether the positive food is infectious", Li Ning, deputy director of the National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment, said:

  The possibility of new coronavirus infection through the digestive tract is extremely small;

  Nucleic acid testing mainly targets the patient’s nucleic acid fragments. Whether it is a live virus or a dead virus, it may be positive. Therefore, a positive nucleic acid test in a food does not mean it is contagious, but only means that it has been contaminated by the new coronavirus;

  At present, there are no cases of consumers contracting the new coronavirus through purchasing and processing food;

  Judging from the detection of COVID-19 on food and its outer packaging across the country, the overall positive rate is relatively low, less than one in 10,000, and the overall pollution is relatively low.
