The pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca will deliver 40 million doses of its corona vaccine to the European Union within the first quarter.

This was announced by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Twitter.

That is half of the originally targeted amount of 80 million cans.

The group has promised nine million additional cans compared to an offer from last week for this period.

In addition, delivery will start a week earlier than planned, and the group will also expand its production capacities in Europe.

“A step forward in vaccines,” wrote von der Leyen.

Von der Leyen spoke on Sunday with the CEOs of those manufacturers with whom the EU has concluded supply contracts.

Astrazeneca had surprisingly announced a week ago that it would deliver only 31 million doses of vaccine to EU countries in the first quarter instead of 80 million.

The EU reacted indignantly and put pressure on the company to withdraw the delivery cut.

According to von der Leyen, at least part of this should happen.

The vaccine has been approved for adults in the EU without age limit since Friday.

In Germany, the Standing Vaccination Commission only recommends the drug for adults under 65 years of age.
