After a single case of infection with the corona virus, the Australian city of Perth has announced a five-day lockdown for its almost two million residents.

Schools are not allowed to open on Monday as planned, all residents have to stay at home from Sunday evening.

They are only allowed to leave the house to go to the doctor, to go shopping, to work or to play sports.

In addition to the residents of the city of Perth, people from the nearby regions of Peel and South West are also affected.

According to the authorities, a security guard in a quarantine hotel had tested positive for the corona virus.

He was believed to have contracted a returnee who was staying at the hotel and who was apparently infected with the more contagious variant of the virus that first appeared in the UK.

It is the first infection within the state of Western Australia in ten months, the authorities said.

"Our model is to be very, very quick, and harsh," said Western Australia Prime Minister Mark McGowan.

The outbreak should be brought under control and spread among the population prevented.

Australia, with its 25 million inhabitants, has come through the Corona crisis comparatively well so far - mainly because of its strict requirements.

Three weeks ago, a short lockdown was imposed in the city of Brisbane on the east coast after a single infection.

To date, Australian authorities have recorded just over 28,800 infections and 909 deaths.
