An expression coined by a journalist

Gentleman burglar

, it is the nickname of Arsène Lupine, but also the title of the first collection of short stories of Maurice Leblanc, published in 1907. The expression sums up the character well, but it was not invented by the author !

We owe it to a journalist from the

Petit Journal

, in an article entitled "Les drillers de murailles", published in 1905 and which was interested in a new phenomenon of the time….

The thugs disguised themselves as bourgeois to go unnoticed among their victims.

And to describe them, the journalist wrote: "Thieves are now perfect gentlemen".

Maurice Leblanc took up the formula and first published his news in the newspapers.

The success was such that a publisher offered to publish a collection:

Arsène Lupine, gentleman burglar.
