This was a request made on January 8 by 28 associations on both sides of the Pyrenees.

The European Commission has just asked France and Spain to replace the three bears killed in the massif by the hand of man last year: a bear killed by bullets in Ariège, Sarousse shot dead by a hunter in Aragon and Cachou, probably poisoned with antifreeze in the Val d'Aran.

In a letter addressed to associations, the European institution explains having "indicated to the French authorities that the replacement of the three killed bears seems at least necessary".

It also indicates that "in the light of the unfavorable state of conservation of the bear in France, the recommendations formulated in the scientific expertise of the National Museum of Natural History in terms of reintroductions and the provisions of the action plan Brown bear 2018-2028 ”.

A call to order that sounds like a victory for the associations for the defense of the plantigrade who recently sent a formal notice to the President of the Republic and the Minister of Ecology so that they replace the three bears dead, otherwise, they will file a complaint.

These regularly recall the commitments of Spain and France with regard to the conservation of the brown bear and the respect for national and international texts in force.

They also demand from the two States judicial measures "to establish the responsibilities of the perpetrators of these acts" which led to the death of the bears.
