Despite the falling number of new corona infections in many European countries, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) it is still too early to relax restrictions.

In 30 of 53 European countries, "a significant decrease" in the 14-day incidence can be seen, said WHO Regional Director Hans Kluge in Copenhagen on Thursday.

"But transmission rates are still too high to stress health and other related areas, so it would be too early to relax."

Kluge described the current situation as a “pandemic paradox”: Although there is “real hope due to the start of vaccinations, but new variants that give cause for concern mean greater uncertainty and a higher risk”.

According to a count by the AFP news agency based on official information from the authorities, a good 1.42 million new corona infections were registered in Europe in the past seven days.

That is around ten percent less than in the seven days before.
