A historic record!

Faced with the unprecedented health crisis, the French spent an average of 3.58 hours in front of the television, i.e. eighteen minutes more than in 2019, according to the annual TV study published this Wednesday by Médiamétrie, which combines linear television and replay.

"While adapting to the constraints imposed by the situation, the television channels have invented and created concepts which have found and seduced a public in search of escape", analyzes Laurence Deléchapt, director of the television department at Médiamétrie.

This historic viewing time is linked both to an increase in the number of daily viewers which amounted to 44.3 million viewers in 2020, or 8% more than in 2019, but also to the time spent by each watching television (+ 3% vs 2019).

All audiences are affected by this increase and first and foremost CSP + who spent 34 more minutes each day in front of their small screen, or young people aged 15 to 34 (+14 minutes).

Figures correlated with confinements

4:29 daily in March, 4:40 - a record - in April, 4:25 in November, and 4:11 in December.

The figures are obviously correlated with the confinements and other curfews put in place, but as Laurence Deléchapt remarks "the listening time has remained at a level higher than 2019 throughout the year".

The French, current seekers

The increase in television viewing time was largely driven by direct, which increased by twenty-two minutes in one year.

The French have been particularly interested in news: the TV newspapers have brought together some 21.2 million viewers each evening and the news channels, 16.7 million daily viewers, who each gain 4 million viewers compared to the last year.

Television has also been able to bring the French together by entertaining them with great sagas such as

Harry Potter

or

James Bond

, heritage films such as

Le Gendarme marie,

however multi-

broadcast

, or new adapted formats such as

Tous en cuisine,

live with Cyril Lignac on M6 which lasted beyond confinement.

This resurgence of the small skylight has not penalized SVoD consumption.

8.3 million French people watched an SVoD program every day, regardless of the screen.

And this consumption on demand represents on average twenty-six minutes and thirty seconds of daily listening time, all screens combined.
