The circulation of motorized two-wheelers between two lines of cars, which had been experienced since 2016 in 11 departments including Ile-de-France, will be prohibited from February 1, the delegation to Road Safety announced on Wednesday.

This experiment, which took place on certain roads in Ile-de-France, Bouches-du-Rhône, Gironde and Rhône, ended on January 31.

The objective was to try to regulate this very widespread practice among bikers.

But, for the delegation to road safety, the results of the accident are "disappointing".

More accidents, report says

A report "shows that motorized two-wheeler accidents have increased by 12% on roads where the inter-lane traffic experiment (CIF) has taken place while it has fallen by 10% on other roads. of the departments concerned, ”according to a statement from the Road Safety delegation.

The conclusions of this report "do not allow us to integrate inter-lane traffic into the highway code today".

Request for a "new experiment"

"The objective of this experiment was to reduce the accident rate of motorized two-wheelers by supervising the practice of inter-line traffic", underlines the interministerial delegate for road safety, Marie Gautier-Melleray.

"However, the result is not up to our expectations since the ratio of accidents on CIF networks compared to other networks has significantly increased in one area and is slightly higher elsewhere," she continues.

The delegate asks for "a new experiment, with adapted rules, in order to perpetuate this practice in complete safety".

This second experiment, which requires a new decree, could in particular integrate "the enlargement of the geographical areas concerned, appropriate and continuous communication to improve the teaching of all road users on the subject".

Riders of motorized two-wheelers accounted for 23.1% of deaths in 2019 while their share in road traffic was 2%.

With the same mileage covered, the risk of losing his life for a driver of two-wheelers is 22 times higher than for users of light vehicles.
