How do I identify that my baby has colic?

"To define infant colic, we can rely on the rule of three, but it must be taken with a grain of salt. It is summed up by the formula: 'three hours a day, for three days, for three weeks . '

So we can think of colic if a baby starts crying at this frequency. Obviously, if your child cries 2 hours 50 minutes and only two days out of three, this also applies. Infant colic affects children from the three or four weeks old They are rare at birth and improve almost spontaneously around two or three months.

What do we know about the origin of infant colic?

In fact, there is a likely misuse of language.

We call it infant colic, without being sure that it really is.

We're not even sure the babies are in pain.

If it is, it doesn't even come from the belly.

Especially since experiments have been made.

Babies were given morphine to see if they would suffer less, but the babies were still crying as much.

Infant colic is also very special, as babies will cry in the evening and at night but not so much during the day.

It is as if something is happening in connection with the biological clock.

Is there a hormonal mechanism?

Perhaps.

Another lead could come from the microbiota.

Having a particular bowel movement or an immaturity of the digestive tract could give them this discomfort.

Because it is indeed the discomfort that we are talking about: the child will squirm, express himself by crying, without knowing whether he is necessarily in pain.

How to relieve this colic?

Unfortunately, there is no miracle way to stop this colic.

However, we know that they affect 20 to 25% of babies in industrialized countries.

No medication works, although it can be given from time to time.

One trick is to carry the baby.

In the end, that's what works.

We have realized this in Africa: when the baby is carried on the back, he cries less.

Another possibility: massage the stomach in a clockwise direction.

Sometimes a parent may go wild and let the baby cry.

It's not that serious.

It is possible to let him cry for five minutes and do something else ... The car ride while waiting for it to pass is also a way of relieving this problem.

Some give them fennel (in herbal tea, for example).

I also advise parents not to hesitate to talk about it.

On a case-by-case basis, the treatments can be adapted.

Otherwise, you have to be patient.

It goes by itself and leaves no after-effects. "
