Every year, the Association of Dutch Architects awards the prizes to

the best buildings in the country

.

This year the public award went to the Domusdela-Marienhage project, by Dutch architects Diederendirrix Architects and Architecten EN EN.

The Domusdela complex is a

former

11th century

Augustinian monastery

converted into a hotel and ceremony center located in the center of Eindhoven.

It is made up of five buildings that have the category of national monument and that have been transformed into a unitary and contemporary space.

Thanks to a modern building that serves as an entrance and distributor, the areas of the complex are connected and accessibility and light have been improved.

The Augustinian church and the student chapel are now a space to celebrate funerals, weddings, conferences, talks or other events, while the old

Augustinian school houses the facilities of the boutique hotel and the cafeteria

.

The Marienhage hotel opened its doors

a few months ago

and plans to complete some facilities such as the spa area this year.

The hotel combines current design with the richness of history, creating very special rooms where you can breathe

the spiritual history

of the site.

Lamps by

Studio Drift

, chairs by

Moroso

, design pieces with nods to the religious stamp of the building combine perfectly with a wall from 1628 or the central altar of the church, placed in a highly visible place in the hotel.

The colors of the walls and doors have been chosen following the

original colors of the monastery

, and the rooms have kept their 4 meter high ceilings.

The figure of Eve

, the forbidden apple and the snake of paradise are very present in many details of the hotel.

The large landscaped courtyard, the Brasserie Rita and the De Refter restaurant, which will open soon under the direction of

Michelin-starred chef Van Groeninge

, are open to everyone, so locals can also enjoy the charm of the past, in a city where hardly any historical buildings are preserved.
