Will the Festival of Brexit take place?

While the United Kingdom discovers the reality of its exit from Europe - at the expense of many entrepreneurs and artisans - the musical event launched under the government of Theresa May is no longer relevant according to some MEPs.

With an estimated cost of £ 120million, more and more voices are calling for this money to be used better, especially with the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lib Dem MP Jamie Stone called on Boris Johnson, the current Prime Minister, to simply ask him to cancel the festival.

He launched a petition which he relayed on his Twitter account.

He calls for the Festival of Brexit money to go "to caregivers, freelance artists and anyone in need of financial support" at this time when "we are being destroyed by a pandemic".

The note for the taxpayer

The government must indeed finance this festival which intends to show "the unique strengths of the United Kingdom in creativity and innovation".

However, for a year, the world of culture has suffered, as in other countries, and is not recognized either in Great Britain as essential.

Boris Johnson and his government demonstrated it again by not obtaining any agreement for artists wishing to perform in Europe, who will therefore have to pay taxes and visas to go on tour and negotiate country by country.

Already last year, the Music Venue Trust, which represents theaters closed since the start of the pandemic, called for the Festival of Brexit to be canceled and to use the funds allocated for the event to the world of culture. .

The government of Boris Johnson, which is expected to announce new even more restrictive measures as the death toll from Covid-19 approaches 100,000, has not yet reacted.
