If we are trying to imagine what our societies will look like after the pandemic, we should avoid the field of futurology, which ignores our ignorance in the first place. Future research is the systematic prediction of the future, whereby this view into the future is based on current social trends. And this is exactly where the problem lies: futurology derives its predictions primarily from current trends. However, it fails to consider historical “miracles”, radical breaks that can only be explained in retrospect.
