Italian Coast Guard divers discovered a giant whale carcass off the coast of Sorrento.
The coast guard announced on Wednesday that it was "allegedly one of the largest" dead whales ever found in the Mediterranean.
The divers had therefore already discovered the huge mammal on Sunday.
According to the coast guard, the divers had been called to an area off the coast of the southern Italian tourist stronghold after another, smaller whale was discovered there.
This animal has meanwhile disappeared again in the sea, it said.
According to the information, the dead whale has now been transported from Sorrento to the port of Naples.
There the carcass will be examined by marine biologists and other experts for the cause of death.
