Public transport is neglected by travelers, according to the results of a study published Tuesday, January 19 by the Observatory of Emerging Mobility and conducted by Obsoco (Observatory for society and consumption) and the study firm Chronos.

Indeed, 60% of residents would prefer to walk (+ 22%) or use a bicycle (+ 6%) to get around, reports

.

According to the study, carried out on 4,500 people between October 21 and 29, 2020, 52% of these people would fear meeting travelers who do not respect barrier gestures.

Abandoned taxis and carpooling

Fewer city dwellers take the bus, metro or RER, which has fallen by 10%.

Taxis and carpooling are also shunned, -5% each, as well as VTC, -3%.

Car use, on the other hand, increased by 3%.

"After several years of decline, the car seems to respond cyclically to the risks (health) and aspirations (freedom) aroused by the crisis", according to the authors of the study.

The purchase of bicycles on the rise

If the study says nothing about motorcycles and scooters, manufacturers have noticed an increase in sales at the end of the first confinement: + 37% in June or even + 26% in July.

When it comes to two wheels, the bicycle is successful.

According to Obsoco, 3.4 million people bought one in 2020. One million of them have gone electric.

Figures that professionals expected to reach in 2024 or 2025.

And for Jérôme Valentin, boss of Cycleurope and president of the Union sports et cycles, the coming year promises to be just as good.

Transport Minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari recently announced that 750 million euros of public money would be invested over the next few years "to bring out new cycle paths in order to help communities".
