  • American mink: the elusive predator that threatens the development of anti-Covid vaccines

A mink farm located in the Coruña municipality of A Baña, in A Coruña, has registered a focus of positivity of SARS-CoV-2, a case that the Xunta has reported this Thursday to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

This is the second case of SARS-CoV-2 infection in American mink in Spain, after the one detected last June in a farm in the province of Teruel.

The Ministry of Rural Affairs has reported this outbreak which, according to details, was detected in application of the current surveillance protocols for this disease in this type of American mink farms in Spain.

The Xunta has detailed that the exploitation, in which "SARS-CoV-2 viral circulation was confirmed, remains immobilized and subject to official surveillance and control by the Official Veterinary Services of the Rural Environment Department after the detection of the outbreak in the controls that are carried out within the framework of the prevention plan in this type of farm.

In addition, in the coming days, "in application of the current legal regulations and with the ultimate objective of preserving public health, the Xunta has reported that all the animals on the farm will be slaughtered, which has 3,100 minks (2,500 females and 600 males), as well as disinfection measures and outbreak control.

25 farms in Galicia

There are currently a total of 25 active mink farms in Galicia, with a census of 69,186 breeding animals.

With these data, it has most of the business volume of the sector in the State since "three quarters" of the total farms are located in the Galician Community.

The Ministry of Rural Affairs has explained that, from the first information received from the Netherlands in relation to farms infected with SARS-CoV-2, the Xunta maintained permanent contact with the Galician fur sector and provided updated information on the situation .

In addition, the outbreak will be officially notified by the Ministry to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Commission.

Precisely, after the case registered in Teruel and after the Government of Denmark ordered the sacrifice of millions of animals, Galician environmental associations such as Adega requested the closure of these facilities due to the high risk of spread of COVID-19.

Precisely, this very Thursday, the Official Gazette of Galicia (DOG) publishes the order of the Ministry of Rural Affairs by which aid is convened to entities recognized as livestock health defense groups (ADSG) of Galicia for the period 2021- 2022.

The budget for this call amounts to a total of 2.15 million euros.

The objective of these subsidies is to improve the health status of Galician livestock farms through the implementation of common zoosanitary programs for the prevention and control of animal diseases.

These animal health planning programs must be carried out between March 1, 2021 and February 28, 2022.
