With a number of patients in intensive care at the highest since mid-December, the upward trend in hospitalizations of coronavirus patients continued on Wednesday, according to figures from Public Health France.

This Wednesday, 2,842 patients were hospitalized in intensive care, a figure never reached since December 15 and which has continued to increase for 10 days.

Over 300 deaths in 24 hours

The total number of hospital patients climbed to 25,650, the highest since December 8.

These are 292 patients who entered intensive care in 24 hours, and 1,911 in hospital.

The number of cases has approached the three million mark since the start of the epidemic, at 2,965,117, or nearly 27,000 more in one day.

As for deaths, Public Health France has identified 71,652 since the start of the epidemic, including 316 recorded over the last 24 hours.

The vaccination campaign has accelerated significantly, "now open to all people over 75 as well as vulnerable people at very high risk," recalls the Ministry of Health.

Nearly 700,000 people vaccinated since the end of December

This identified Wednesday evening 692,777 people vaccinated since the end of December, more than 100,000 more than the day before.

The positivity rate of those tested remained at 6.7%, as the day before.

Since Saturday, a curfew has been imposed from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. throughout the national territory, whereas it started at 8 p.m. previously in most of the territory.

But epidemiologists fear that the arrival in France of more contagious variants of the coronavirus, which have appeared in other countries, will start the epidemic on the rise.
