The State Administration of Market Supervision issued a letter to investigate "anti-aging drugs"

Some e-commerce companies are still selling domestic NMN

In the past year, the so-called "anti-aging medicine" has become the new darling of the health care product market. Even if the price of a bottle is thousands of yuan, many consumers are eager for it, and even celebrities such as Pan Shiyi have appeared as their "endorsements."

A reporter from Beijing Youth Daily learned on January 19 that the Food Management Department of the State Administration for Market Supervision issued a letter stating that currently NMN (the main ingredient of "anti-aging medicine") has not yet been approved in my country, which means that NMN is in my country and cannot be used as food. Production and operation.

The letter requires all localities to investigate and deal with related violations.

Comprehensive investigation by the State Administration for Market Regulation

NMN for food production and operation

The Food Operation Department of the State Administration for Market Regulation has issued the "Letter on Investigating the Illegal Operation of "Non-Old Drugs"", clarifying that nicotinamide mononucleic acid (NMN) cannot be produced and operated as food in my country, and requiring a comprehensive investigation of relevant operators .

The letter stated that recently, the media reported that operators had illegally operated "anti-aging drugs". The main ingredient of "anti-aging drugs" was nicotinamide mononucleic acid (NMN) or was produced from this as raw materials, and some of them existed in common forms such as compressed candy. It mainly promotes the effects of "anti-aging, repairing DNA, and preventing Alzheimer's disease".

At present, NMN has not been approved for medicines, health foods, food additives and new food raw materials in my country, that is, NMN cannot be produced and operated as food in China.

For this reason, the department proposed to conduct a comprehensive investigation of relevant food operators, and found that there were illegal activities, timely verify and investigate and deal with in accordance with the law, and the relevant investigation results will be reported to the department on February 1.

In fact, with the concept of "anti-aging", NMN products have quickly become popular in the domestic market.

During the "Double Eleven" in 2020, JD data shows that the turnover of NMN products increased by 1500% year-on-year, and sales reached the top again.

A reporter from Beijing Youth Daily inquired on JD.com and Tmall platforms on January 19 and found that there are many brands of NMN products and their sales are good.

Some vitamin products must be marked with "non-NMN" products to increase their exposure.

Taking the JD platform as an example, there are over 5600 products under the NMN keyword.

And a product has more than 5200 reviews alone.

According to incomplete statistics from reporters from Beijing Youth Daily, Tmall’s NMN products can only be viewed after turning 12 pages. Currently, there are nearly 100 NMN brands on sale on Tmall International.

Most of these NMN products are expensive. A bottle of imported 60-capsule products sells for between 1,200 yuan and 3,000 yuan.

Some NMN products are suspected of illegal sales on e-commerce platforms

A reporter from the Beijing Youth Daily noted that as soon as the letter from the State Administration for Market Supervision came out, many e-commerce brands were "dissociating themselves" and proving themselves to be "overseas" flagship stores, or clearly referred to as "cross-border purchase" products.

my country has never approved NMN as a license for medicines, health foods, food additives and new food materials.

The reason why NMN can be sold on e-commerce platforms is mainly because it is included in the cross-border purchase "positive list" as a derivative of the vitamin B family.

In 2016, the "Announcement on Announcement of the List of Cross-border E-commerce Retail Import Commodities", commonly known as the "Positive List", jointly drafted by eleven ministries and commissions, was officially released, including "unmixed vitamins and derivatives" and other commodities.

It can be sold through business-to-consumer (B2C), that is, cross-border purchases.

However, although such products are included in the "positive list" and can be imported, they cannot be produced and operated as food in China. However, reporters from the Beijing Youth Daily found that many NMN products silently classified themselves as requiring national approval before being used. "Health food (food health word)".

After setting the product selection item as "health food (食健字)", there are still more than 1,500 NMN products sold on the JD platform.

In addition to a lot of "hotness", there are also some "unknown origin" products.

On the JD platform, a product named "nmn15000 Gene Amugene Capsules Anti-NAD+ Supplement Aging Nicotinamide Mononucleotide Green Garden 1 bottle (60 capsules)", the product claims to be "healthcare grade" "At the same time, it also declared in the table of specifications that it was "Blue Hat Logo: Health Food (Food Health)".

The store it operates is Longyan Yi Naide Electronic Commerce Co., Ltd., and its business license specifies that the scope of its food business does not include import and export commodities.

According to the letter from the State Administration for Market Regulation, my country has not approved any domestic NMN medicines and health products.

In our country, NMN cannot be used for food production and operation.

But on the Taobao platform, a reporter from Beijing Youth Daily also found that NMN products that claimed to be domestically produced were on sale.

A product on Taobao named "domestic nmn9600 nicotinamide mononucleotide, Japanese nad+ supplement to resist aging of gene repair", and its place of origin is named "Jiangsu, China".

The product claims on the content page that it is "easy to fall asleep", "muscle soreness and weakness disappear", "crow's feet become lighter" and so on.

And another product named "NMN9000 domestically exported to the United States coenzyme β-nicotinamide mononucleotide anti-aging gene repair 9600", produced in mainland China, directly declared "activation of longevity genes" and "oral beauty and beauty pills."

There is a huge controversy over NMN in academic circles

Only a few countries have approved it as a health product

Although merchants claim that NMN has great anti-aging effects, in fact, Dr. David Sinclair, who invented the drug, only completed experiments on NMN in mice and did not conduct clinical trials on humans.

According to my country's regulations, if NMN is to be approved as a health product in the country, it must undergo clinical trials and scientific demonstrations to prove that it has the claimed health effect.

A reporter from the Beijing Youth Daily learned that Guo Husk had issued an article in August 2020 that the role of NMN in the human body is still unclear.

The article stated that the results of clinical studies of NMN in humans are very few. There is only one paper published in the Journal of Endocrinology in February 2020, reporting a phase one clinical study initiated by Japanese scientists in 2016.

Its main conclusion is that "data shows that it is safe to take 500 mg of NMN once orally."

The paper stated that oral NMN did not significantly affect heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen, body temperature, etc., nor did it bring significant changes to vision and sleep.

As for the most critical data of "anti-aging drugs"-NAD+ levels in tissues and plasma, the study bluntly did not measure.

In fact, currently, the only country that grants NMN "legal status" is Japan. On March 31, 2020, Japan included NMN in the list of food ingredients.

A reporter from the Beijing Youth Daily learned that in Europe, NMN is not approved as a raw material for food or health products, that is to say, the production and sale of related products in Europe will be considered illegal; and in Australia, NMN raw materials are also It has not been approved for sale locally, and the related products can only be used for export.

The most loosely regulated place is the United States. According to the relevant US FDA regulations, the use of NMN as a raw material for nutritional supplements only needs to be filed.

Therefore, most NMN products are produced in the United States and Japan.

However, according to US FDA regulations, nutraceuticals may not claim the therapeutic or preventive effects of diseases.

In response to the exaggerated publicity of the NMN brand, the FDA has issued warning letters to companies many times.
