Follow the evolution of Joe Biden's inauguration to the 46th President of the United States and Kamala Harris to his Vice President here.

Welcome to this live blog.

My name is Matthijs le Loux, General Editor, and I will keep you informed over the next few hours on the developments surrounding the inauguration of the new US President and Vice President, Democrats Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

  • Biden (78) is the oldest US president ever sworn in.

  • Harris (56) scores a hat-trick: she becomes the first female, black and Asian vice president.

  • No audience is present at the inauguration, both due to the coronavirus and fear of disturbances after the storming of the Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6.

  • Republican Donald Trump declined to attend the inauguration of his successor and left Washington in the morning.
