A sign announcing the ban on smoking, near a school, in Baillargues -

Ville de Baillargues

  • The town of Baillargues, near Montpellier, has banned smoking or vaping outside, near schools, nurseries and playgrounds.

  • This measure aims to protect the health of children, but also the environment.

  • On the side of parents' associations, the measure is unanimous.

Parents: from now on, in Baillargues (Hérault), it is strictly forbidden to grill one while waiting for the bell to ring.

As in some other municipalities in France, a municipal decree prevents the consumption of tobacco near places frequented by children: schools, nursery, play areas and gymnasium.

The objective of this commune of 7,700 inhabitants, near Montpellier, is to “fight against passive smoking suffered by children”.

The ban, materialized on signs near the places where it is in force, also applies to vaping.

"It all started with a request from parents of students who were worried about seeing several adults smoke or vape near places frequented by children", explains Sandrine Gautier (various right), elected to school affairs.

Smoking in front of a school is "inappropriate"

"We wanted to respond to this problem by materializing these areas with a ban on smoking and vaping," continues the city councilor.

This decision also makes it possible to respect our environment, because fewer cigarette ends are thrown on the ground.

And let's not forget that in this way, the parents of students set a good example by abstaining from smoking.

“And, adds the city of Baillargues, in these times of pandemic, smoking forced to… drop the mask.

Not very "Covid-19 compatible".

On the side of parents' associations, the measure is unanimous.

CCI, the Independent Association of Parents of Students, from Baillargues is delighted with this municipal decision, for which it has "been campaigning for several years": "Even if the presence of people smoking near a school would be occasional, the fact remains that it seems inappropriate to us, continue the parents.

This measure should be in effect in all schools, at least kindergarten and elementary.

"

"Children should not consider that being an adult is smoking"

The same satisfaction to the GPE, the Parents of pupils of the municipality, which indicates that "the majority of parents" that the association represents "agrees with the ban on smoking in front of schools": "It is not It is not so much the smoke that bothers you because you are outside, but the gesture that trivializes smoking in front of children.

"

Doctor Bernard Basset shares this opinion.

For the president of the Addictions France association, the measure is important, especially for the disastrous example that cigarettes around schools show to the youngest.

“Smoking near schools standardizes tobacco among children,” he says.

It is not desirable that we advertise cigarettes where we train the youngest.

Adults are the future model for children.

Children should not think of being an adult as smoking.

We would also like this to be the case for alcohol.
