Hitman 3 is an election-time game for the golden age of conspiracy theories.

At a time when more and more people seem to be losing their grip on reality in the face of theories about Qanon, pizza gate or "Finland does not exist", Hitman tickles the foil hat nerve and lets the player infiltrate the secret societies that "actually" rule the world.

And of course, murder them in creative ways.

But the script is well written.

Often with relevant social criticism, such as against giant media conglomerates or experimental biotech barons.

Their evil may be a bit like a comic book, but the dialogue is often well written and credibly woven into the gaming experience itself.

Hitman 3 is said to end a 20-year game series with many spinoff products.

For example, two lousy film adaptations that no one remembers.

Sure, maybe this is Hitman's last contract.

The Danish developer IO interactive is soon expected to move on with a new James Bond game.

It's a bit of a shame, as Hitman has been like a kind of bizarro twin to 007. Spy thrillers in exclusive environments, but with the uncharismatic Agent 47, a cloned assassin with no sense of morality that reveals itself among the world's elite.

In the last chapter, Agent 47 goes back to his roots and ends up at war with his former client.

In terms of gameplay, Hitman 3 largely resembles and functions like its predecessors.

We sneak around in large but at the same time clearly insulated sandboxes.

Beautifully staged and crammed with potential murder weapons, disguises and victims.

For example, a party among royalty in a skyscraper in Dubai, a fake funeral in a mansion belonging to the family behind a media empire and a techno club in Berlin that resembles the huge Berghain model.

My favorite mission is a rainy

Chinese metropolis where I have been assigned to murder two scientists who are engaged in monstrous transhumanist experiments.

The Hitman series is also like an inverted war simulator like Call of Duty.

Instead of shooting faceless poor people into some godforsaken part of the world, Agent 47 wanders around the privileged class' most private room, getting to know their targets on an intimate level.

But Hitman 3 never becomes pretentious and retains the charm and humor of previous installations.

A worthy nail in the coffin after long and faithful service.
