Prior to his inauguration, Joe Biden, like three democratic presidents, did before him, asking a poet to write and perform a work.

22-year-old Amanda Gorman is the youngest poet ever read at an installation.

She is from Los Angeles and made her debut as a 17-year-old, with poetry that revolves around themes such as oppression, feminism and origin.

The work performed at the installation is called "The Hill We Climb" and she finished writing the poem after the storming of the Capitolium.

She sat up late that night, adding verses about the apocalyptic scenes she saw unfolding in the convention building, writes the New York Times.

During the installations by Robert F Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, Robert Frost and Maya Angelou read, among others.
