We are in the part of the Iberian Peninsula that since long before the first meteorological measurements certified it, accumulates the

lowest temperature records

.

The cold is so intense here that, indeed, it seems extraterrestrial.

Bello

, a small town in Teruel with just over 200 residents, recorded last Tuesday, January 12, the lowest temperature ever recorded in Spain in an inhabited place: -25.4ºC.

In the surroundings they did not walk very far.

Towns like

Molina de Aragón

and

Sigüenza

, in Guadalajara;

and

Calamocha

or

Santa Eulalia del Campo

, all in Teruel, easily exceeded

20ºC below zero

.

MEDIEVAL AND BORDER VILLAS

Let's start with Sigüenza, a monumental town that is preparing to begin its

IX Centenary

this year

,

which will be celebrated in 2024. This is forecast.

The covid has suspended the most recommended way to reach the World Heritage city, the

medieval train, a

heroic journey that begins in Madrid and is accompanied by music, theater, history and the occasional sweet.

The railway authorities assure to restart their transit as soon as the sanitary circumstances allow.

The

Parador Nacional

is open, although with the logical capacity restrictions

,

nestled in the magnificent 12th century Arab fortress.

Historic center of the medieval town of Sigüenza (Guadalajara).

Molina de Aragón

is the next stop.

As a good border town, its

castle

presides over the hamlet.

It also stands out in some hills and fields completely covered by snow and that offer an unknown and beautiful view of the population.

The Jewish quarter, the Plaza de España and, above all, the view of the Romanesque bridge over the Gallo river, with the old houses and crenellated towers in the background, drain the batteries of as many photos as are thrown.

On the outskirts, the sickle of the Rooster is the most remarkable thing, although visiting the place these days requires an almost Himalayan team in which

rackets, hiking boots and poles

should not be lacking

.

Effortless, but unforgettable.

THE VILLAGE WITH A RECORD FOR COLD

Barely fifty kilometers separate Molina from

Bello

, a distance that can be a world depending on the roads.

The town with a record of cold is a neighbor of the pride of the lands of Jiloca and Daroca, the Gallocanta lagoon.

The most important wetland of this elevated moorland is the stage and end of the journey for some of the most incredible travelers on our planet:

the cranes.

Cranes in the Gallocanta lagoon.

This time of year is the best to see them, as thousands come here from

northern Europe

to escape the cold winters.

Among its unmistakable cacophony of growls, it is not complicated to a good list of the more than a hundred species that accompany them, among which there are no shortage of storks, seagulls and even the occasional absent-minded flamingo.

Teruel

exists, no matter how much the social currents and, now, the snow and the cold make it difficult for them.

In the main square, the Torico does not seem to be fazed by the scourge of the elements and despite its small size, it continues to control the rhythm of the Mudejar city par excellence.

The Mausoleum of the Lovers of Teruel is a good place to take refuge these days.

Apart from certifying the real existence of that couple, one of the rooms gives us the clue of a good recipe for the moments we live: Love in difficult times.

The Paleontological Museum of Dinópolis is another of the essentials of the Villa del Torito and another good place to forget the cold among precise life-size replicas of the giant saurians that lived here a few million years ago.

The last point is no less important.

In the center of the city, the Teruel Hospitality School offers the resounding constellation of

gastronomic specialties

of the land, passed through the sieve of modern culinary concepts.

Impossible to miss it.
