Reporters Without Borders in the United States has compiled a list of eight points they want Joe Biden to follow.

One of the points is that Biden takes a clear stand for press freedom within 100 days of being installed.

- Just not making the press the enemy of the people is a good start, says Anna Nelson at Reporters Without Borders.

She also highlights the importance of reintroducing the White House press conferences.

Furthermore, they want freedom of the press to become a foreign policy issue, and to mark when free journalism is restricted internationally.

Over 800 attacks on journalists

According to the organization US press freedom tracker, Trump has, since announcing his presidential candidacy, tweeted condescendingly about journalists and the media on average once a day, until his account was closed just over ten days ago.

About 500 of those posts were aimed at individuals in the journalistic corps.

They also state that more than 800 attacks on journalists have been committed in 2020, where at least 37 of them were in connection with the election observation.

- That type of attack must be addressed, says Anna Nelson.

A polarized media climate

The view of facts and opinions by the Americans, and the American news media, has become a debated topic.

Can it be said that the media are also responsible for the polarization?

- Yes you could say that.

The polarization we see in politics sounds like an echo, in the form of which media one adopts.

That's a big concern.

We did not end up in this overnight and we will not get out of it overnight, says Anna Nelson.

She believes that the problem goes hand in hand with local media losing their funding.

- If we think about truth, and that it is based on trust, a lot of it starts locally, she says.
