They patrol in 4x4, promising to contact the authorities if they surprise an illegal migrant.

Like the operation carried out in 2018 in the Alps, the far-right activists of the small Generation Identity group decided on Tuesday to police, and the buzz, in the Pyrenees.

They notably chose the Col du Portillon, in Haute-Garonne, on the Franco-Spanish border.

A passage that they have probably not chosen at random since it has recently been closed by prefectural decree with regard to "the terrorist threat".

🇫🇷 Our “Defend Europe” teams are deployed throughout the border area with Spain.

This operation aroused the indignation of elected officials.

In a joint statement Carole Delga (PS), the president of the Occitanie region, Georges MĂ©ric (PS), the president of the departmental council but also the deputy of the constituency and the mayor of Luchon, rose up against "this hate speech ".

They urge the prefect "to put an end firmly and without delay to this coup, unworthy and contrary to the values of the Republic and [their] territory".

Elected officials also ask the state "to prosecute these individuals" and the Minister of the Interior to dissolve their group.

In the middle of the afternoon, gendarmes were deployed at the Col du Portillon.
