PSV has struggled to reach the quarter finals of the TOTO KNVB Cup tournament on Tuesday evening.

The team from Eindhoven had many opportunities against FC Volendam in the first half of the away match and struck after the break (0-2).

The Kitchen Champion Division club had no fewer than fourteen shooting opportunities before the break, six of which were on target, but PSV held up wonderfully well.

In the second half, Noni Madueke quickly shot the away team to 0-1, after which Denzel Dumfries used a penalty kick (0-2).

It is the first time since the 2017/2018 season that PSV has reached the quarter-finals in the cup tournament.

The last overall victory of the Eindhoven team was already nine years ago.

PSV does not yet know which club will be the opponent in the quarter-finals, which are scheduled for 9, 10 and 11 February.

A draw will take place later this week, but it is already clear that the team of trainer Roger Schmidt will play an away game.

Earlier in the evening, Excelsior and Vitesse qualified for the quarterfinals.

Schmidt opts for a strong position

Schmidt opted for a strong line-up against the number seven of the Kitchen Champion Division, although second goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall was allowed to start in the Kras Stadium.

The German keeper had a lot to do in the first half, as PSV played weakly and escaped several goals against.

Volendam players Samuele Mulattieri, Boy Deul and Nick Doodeman did not get the ball past Unnerstall, who made an excellent impression.

The only opportunity for PSV to rest was Mauro Júnior.

After the break PSV recovered and the difference in quality was visible.

Madueke, who formed the attack with Donyell Malen, got space from the Volendam defenders in the 52nd minute and shot the ball nicely into the corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Dumfries deserves and uses a penalty kick

With the 0-1 on the scoreboard, PSV did not really run into problems anymore and the game was decided twelve minutes before the end.

Dumfries slipped past his opponent in the Volendam penalty area and fell, after which he himself stood behind the ball.

The Orange-international's penalty was moderate, but the ball went into the goal through keeper Joey Roggeveen.

In the final phase, Volendam was again close to a goal.

Substitute Mike Eerdhuijzen hit the post, making it 0-2.
