According to the ZDF “heute” presenter Petra Gerster, the audience has meanwhile got used to the gendering of the news language.

“After my first broadcast with gender stars in October, around 60 people complained

That's a lot, ”said Gerster of the Berliner“ tageszeitung ”(taz, Monday).

Men in particular wrote her “bad letters”.

"The complaints per program are now only in the single-digit range, so it takes some getting used to," added the 65-year-old journalist.

Gerster criticized that there were still far too few women in news films.

On the one hand, this is due to the still male-dominated reality that journalists have to portray, but it is often “simply also convenience”.

In the first few months of the corona pandemic, only virologists and epidemiologists had their say, and the impression arose that it was a purely male domain.

"We now know better and are seeing a corona expert more and more often on the talk shows," said Gerster, who has moderated the "today" news for 23 years and will retire in spring.

And further: "You just have to look for the competent women because they often don't push themselves into the foreground, and that costs time and effort."

Gender-neutral language is now becoming more and more popular in journalistic usage.

However, this issue is still debated.
