  • Health: ICUs face key weeks to avoid a health collapse greater than in the second wave

The rising pace of numbers in this third wave continues in a way that no one can stop.

Thus, according to data published this Monday by the Ministry of Health,

the accumulated incidence (AI) has increased again compared to Friday (575.10) and is already 689.27, a rise of 114 points

in just three days which again sets a record for the entire pandemic (and it is more than likely not the last since we have not yet reached the peak of the third wave and while the harsh restrictions imposed by the CCAA work, if they do).

The situation is very worrying in some autonomous communities.

Extremadura continues to double the already high national figure with 1,383.62, but it is not the only one.

Very noteworthy is the huge rise in Murcia and Castilla-La Mancha from 889.28 and 780.48 on Friday

, respectively, to 1081.67 and 1006.86 on Monday.

Another nine regions have an AI greater than 600: La Rioja (920.78), Castilla y León (910.80), Valencian Community (896.12), Madrid (789.88), Balearic Islands (680.49), Melilla (645.18), Catalonia (631.20), Andalusia (627.78) and Aragon (615.25).

Although some parameters such as hospitalizations, deaths and especially the number of new infections are always slightly lower on Mondays (they are higher because they include three days, but if it is divided proportionally on those days it is lower) and they are better reflected on Tuesdays, the Last Monday there was a record of infections after a weekend (61,422), a

figure that this week has been repeated with 84,287 new infections

this weekend.

The day before, 7,662 infections were registered (1,552 in Castilla y León, 949 in Galicia and 816 in Catalonia).

With those more than 84,000, there are already 2,336,451 total cases since the start of the pandemic.

The rapid rise of the indicators in this third wave has not yet reached the deceased, which is the last indicator to show the consequences of the increase in infections and incidence.

Since Friday, 455 deaths have been reported, a number higher than last Monday when 401 deaths were registered

.

In the last seven days, there are already 843 deaths (a progressive increase is also observed in this parameter), which brings the total number of deaths since the beginning of the crisis to 53,769.

Hospital occupation

The upward trend in the care burden of the health system continues its course and has also experienced a significant rise this weekend.

The average number of beds occupied by patients with coronavirus in Spain, not including other pathologies, is 18.61%, a figure that exceeds the maximum risk thresholds (more than 15% is very high risk, the maximum level) and a record of occupation in the pandemic (the maximum peak so far was on November 9 with 17.28%).

Intensive care beds, as usual, present a higher percentage: 32.71% (the threshold for very high risk is more than 25%), a figure close to the maximum ICU occupancy peak (32.80% the Nov. 16).

In this last sense,

the communities that are most saturated are the Valencian Community

, with an ICU occupancy of 52.76% (almost five percentage points more than on Friday), La Rioja (46.67%), Catalonia (46.07% , which has risen 4 points), the Balearic Islands (42.72%), Madrid (42.05%, which has risen five points), Castilla-La Mancha (37.93%), Castilla y León (31.56%) , Extremadura (31.48%, which has risen almost five and a half points over the weekend), Aragón (26.50%) and Cantabria (25.41%).

It should be remembered that these percentages are only for Covid patients, we must add those who occupy ICU beds for other pathologies or interventions and, therefore, the degree of saturation is even higher.

Hospitalizations and ICU admissions also continue to rise.

To date there are 23,184 patients admitted for Covid, a number comparable to the 19,403 admitted on November 18

.

Of these, 4,676 correspond to Catalonia, 4,378 to the Valencian Community and 3,550 to Madrid.

Since Friday, 3,119 patients have been admitted, 5,015 in the last seven days.

Of these 3,119, 223 have had to be referred to ICU (398 in the last seven days).

Therefore, since the beginning of the pandemic, there are already 228,204 total hospitalized and 19,739 total ICU cases.

"High point of the third wave"

Despite the bulky figures offered by the Ministry of Health,

Fernando Simón

, director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES), has stated that "we could be reaching the peak period of the third wave", and even in "starting a plateau phase" or towards the decline, always taking the data with great caution, which will be consolidated in the coming days.

However, it has recognized that the impact on hospitals and the deceased of this tendency to soften the increase in cases will take time to appreciate.

In the case of ICUs, the last to show the decline,

"there is great variability between autonomous communities

", with some regions at 50% and others at around 15%.

The occupation of hospital beds exhibits the same variability.

Regarding the restrictive measures, Simón has pointed out that "the measure that has had the greatest impact on the broadcast has been the closure of the interiors of the bars. I know it is not popular."

Extending the curfew "achieves a similar effect" by reducing indoor gathering opportunities.

"There are alternatives, but they are not popular," he admitted.

"All of them generate a significant socioeconomic impact and you have to think about it a lot."

The decision, for the epidemiologist, is in the hands of the health advisers.

Asked on several occasions about the curfew, he has stated that he is not in favor of a specific measure, "but of the correct application of the measures" that are decided. "That decision is not made in this forum. I do not represent the government." , has recalled.

"I understand that it will be valued," he commented, although he has not commented on the position of the Ministry.
