In Germany, over

two million people have been

infected with the virus

since the outbreak of the corona pandemic

.

The health authorities reported

22,368

new corona infections to

the Robert Koch Institute (RKI)

within 24 hours, as the RKI announced on Friday morning.

This means that the number of cases that have become known since the beginning of the pandemic rose to

2,000,958

(as of January 15, 00:00).

It should be noted that the actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, since many infections are not recognized.

The number of new infections reported is on a

weekday comparison

at the lowest level in over two months.

Compared to Friday a week ago, they fell by almost 10,000 cases to just under 22,400, as the reports from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) show.

The last time on Friday the numbers were lower on November 6th.

The RKI had not reported any figures on New Year's and Christmas Day, both Fridays.

These would hardly have been resilient anyway because of the holidays.

There had been fears that because of Christmas and especially New Year's Eve celebrations, the number of infections would rise again, which should be reflected in the numbers from now on.

On the Friday before Christmas, over 30,000 new infections were reported.

On Friday,

1113

new deaths

were also

recorded in a 24-hour period.

The previous high of 1,244 new deaths was reached on Thursday.

Among the new infections registered within 24 hours

, the highest value was reported on December 18,

at

33,777

- but this included 3500

late reports

.

Basically, the interpretation of the data is currently a bit difficult because around the turn of the year, according to the RKI, corona cases were discovered, recorded and transmitted with a delay.

The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants (seven-day incidence) reported to the health authorities within seven days was

146.1

on Friday morning

.

Its previous high was reached on December 22nd at 197.6.

However, the differences between the federal states are currently enormous: Thuringia has the highest incidences with 287.6 and Saxony with 274.1.

Bremen has the lowest value with 78.7.

The

seven-day incidence

is an essential measure for the imposition and relaxation of measures against the spread of the novel virus.

The aim of the federal government is to reduce the incidence to below 50.

Due to the high number of infections, there will be a hard lockdown in Germany at least until January 31.

In the past few days, the number of registered new infections has risen again, according to the RKI situation report on Thursday evening.

Whether this trend will continue beyond the expected follow-up tests and late registrations will only be seen in the course of the next few days.

The total number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to

44,994

.

The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at around 1,641,200.

According to the RKI report on Friday, the

nationwide

seven-day R value

was

0.99

(previous day: 1.02).

This means that 100 infected people theoretically infect 99 more people.

The value represents the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago.

If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.

Thuringia and Saxony with the highest seven-day incidence

In Germany, exit restrictions such as a 15-kilometer radius can apply from a seven-day incidence of 200 or more.

The front runner is the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in Thuringia.

The health department there reported

524.2

new infections per 100,000 inhabitants

in the past seven days

.

Also in a nationwide comparison, the

districts of

Altenburger Land (501.2), Hildburghausen (444.6) and Wittenberg (437)

show many new infections within seven days

.

With a

seven-day incidence

of 287.6,

Thuringia

is

currently the most severely affected state by the pandemic,

ahead of

Saxony

(274.1).

It is noticeable that rural areas in particular are particularly affected by the virus.

New daily high of vaccinations since vaccination started in December

94,654

people in Germany were vaccinated against the coronavirus

within one day

.

This is the highest daily value to date that has been transmitted by the RKI since the vaccination campaign began at the end of December.

According to the report on Friday, the total number of vaccinations approached

the million

mark

at

961,682

.

This involves the first of two injections that are required for complete vaccination protection.

The second round of vaccination should start this weekend.

So far, the product from the German manufacturer Biontech and its US partner Pfizer has been used primarily, and to a lesser extent that from the US manufacturer Moderna.

According to the RKI, a nationwide rate of

1.16

percent

has so far been achieved for initial vaccinations

.

In order to achieve what is known as herd immunity, it is estimated that more than 60 percent of the population would have to be vaccinated.

The vaccination campaign is currently being slowed down mainly by the lack of vaccines.

The at times large differences between the federal states became somewhat smaller.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania remains the front runner with a vaccination rate of 2.2 percent, ahead of Schleswig-Holstein with 1.82 percent.

Baden-Württemberg is now at the bottom with a rate of 0.84 percent, behind Thuringia with 0.9 percent.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than two million people have died after being infected with the coronavirus.
