  • Funding of 26 billion euros is planned for the period 2021-2027.

  • This should allow more students, pupils and professionals to benefit from it.

  • The other challenge of the Erasmus + program will be to compensate for the departure of the United Kingdom due to Brexit.

This is good news in this dark period: in the coming years, more students, pupils and professionals will have an experience abroad.

"Because the Erasmus + program has obtained funding of 26 billion euros for the period 2021-2027, it is almost a doubling of the envelope," said Thursday Thémis Christophidou, Director General for Education at the European Commission.

This should make it possible to reach 10 million European mobilities in just seven years.

And this even if departures are currently fewer due to the health crisis.

“They were suspended at the time of the first confinement, but they resumed afterwards, in particular via summer semesters offered in many partner universities.

They then slowed down in the fall and concentrated on destinations closer to Europe.

With health constraints specific to each country, such as a fortnight sometimes imposed on arrival, ”says Laure Coudret-Laut, director of the Erasmus + France Agency.

If some students might hesitate to apply for mobility at this time because of the uncertain context, they should not restrain themselves, according to her: “Since the start of the health crisis, institutions and training organizations have been able to offer solutions. alternatives adapted to each young person: either by a postponement, or by a change of destination, or by a remote start (online course by their host university before a stay there)… ”

"On average, 100,000 French people have this experience each year"

For now, the figures do not show a decrease in the appetite of the French for experiences abroad: "In 2020, Erasmus + mobility requests increased by 7%", underlined the Minister. of Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer.

“On average, 100,000 French people have this experience each year,” he continued.

Among them, more than 50% of students (internships or studies), around 30% of work-study trainees and trainers in vocational training and 20% of teachers and professors.

With the 2021-2027 program, more teachers will go to train abroad to observe the practices of their colleagues.

Knowing that between 2014 and 2020, 65,000 mobilities were financed for teachers, professors and trainers, who left for an average of one week.

Another axis of development: the departure of pupils from kindergarten to high school.

“Shorter projects will allow new establishments to 'test' Erasmus + projects.

The idea is to simplify access to the program to allow a growing number of young people to experience international life from an early age, ”emphasizes Laure Coudret-Laut.

The emphasis will be on college students.

And to boost the departure of apprentices, mobility advisers will be set up in the CFAs.

UK exits program

The other challenge for Erasmus + will be to compensate for the UK's departure from the program due to Brexit.

Good to know: the Erasmus + stays planned in the United Kingdom until 2020 will take place, potentially until 2023. And since 2016, it seems that the French have anticipated the situation: “We observe that the demand for mobility towards this The country has slowed down in favor of Spain, which today ranks first among the favorite destinations for the French on Erasmus.

Ireland and the English-speaking countries of northern Europe are attracting more and more people for their training in English, ”says Laure Coudret-Laut.

And rest assured, students will have a lot of choice: 33 countries in Europe and 167 countries outside of Europe.

Finally, Erasmus + will further integrate the climate dimension.

"The Erasmus + agency intends to support mobility with a lower carbon impact", indicates Laurence Farreng, MEP, member of the Culture and Education Committee.

Participants using less polluting means of transport will see their scholarship upgraded.
