The streets of Downtown Dubai are brightly lit, taking the city's residents and visitors on a captivating journey of lights and discoveries.

The project includes a group of innovative and sustainable lighting models, which took four months to prepare, and this project contributed to adding more vitality to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard in front of the Address Downtown Hotel, through specially installed lights and the smart use of shading technology.

This concept arose through a joint idea between the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment and Dubai Culture, aiming to create an independent lighting project in one of the famous destinations in Dubai, and during an annual event.

Commenting on the participation of "Dubai Culture" in this initiative, the Director of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Acting Executive Director of the Arts and Literature Sector in "Dubai Culture", Shaima Al-Suwaidi, said that "Dubai Lights is an innovative event that reflects the keenness of (Dubai Culture) to join forces with Various governmental and private entities, in order to enrich the cultural and aesthetic scene of our emirate, in line with the aspirations of our inspiring leadership.

The neighborhood project was inspired by the urban planning and local landmarks that characterize the traditional Emirati neighborhoods. The project’s presentation was designed using light lines, which form visually and metaphorically separating local and architectural activities.

The project draws its concept from the heritage and rich history of homes, traditions and Emirati culture, even as Dubai strives to achieve more progress in modern life and adopt the latest technologies.

The artistic installation guides visitors, through light and shadows, and invites them to cross a range of visible and implicit boundaries, to explore new sights and features as they wander the bustling street.

The neighborhood is the first project of its kind for lighting shows, as seven of the most prominent innovators from the UAE, among them emerging Emirati talents, have been assigned to produce the lighting structures for the project to be displayed during the festival.

Al Suwaidi added: “This joint work coincides with one of the sectoral goals of our updated strategy roadmap, which is to support young local talents and motivate them to continue their bidding. Dubai Culture opened the door for the creative community to communicate with government agencies. The distinctive artistic compositions in this neighborhood and between the organizer of the event ».

The neighborhood project was conceptualized and designed by Rawda Al-Sayegh, Yara Manla, Raghd Al-Ali, Fatima Al-Awadi, Iman Al-Rahma, Ahmed Jeissah and Abdullah Khoury.

The group, which includes disciplines such as multimedia design, photography, architecture and product design, succeeded in integrating its diverse talents to complete the project.

The seven individuals were chosen because of their diverse multidisciplinary skills, in addition to their broad participation in the Dubai art scene.

The neighborhood project lights will be turned on daily at sunset until January 30th.

6 elements that create "the Emirati neighborhood"

The project consists of six components:

“Saka”: a small alley that connects homes in traditional Emirati neighborhoods.

Al Majlis: It is an essential space inside every Emirati home, where family, friends and guests gather around a central coffee table.

“The Mosque”: where the people of the neighborhood gather to pray.

Al Hawi: The traditional Emirati courtyard, which is considered the heart of the house.

This area is located within certain boundaries, and in the middle is a Ghaf tree.

Photosynthesis creates birds, colorful lights, and swings hanging from the tree to represent the various activities that can occur around it.

“Groceries”: a one-stop shop where residents of all ages go to buy their supplies.

Al-Saha: a playground located between Emirati homes and alleys.
