Now Volker Herres speaks up himself: The ARD program director has protested against criticism that he decided too late on Wednesday evening to interrupt the program of the first in view of the events in Washington.

Herres announced in Munich that there was “continuous coordination with Marcus Bornheim, Editor-in-Chief of ARD aktuell” that evening.

He was referring to coverage of "Spiegel.de".

Herres went on to say that the editorial staff of ARD Aktuell in Hamburg, responsible for “Tagesschau” and “Tagesthemen”, wanted the current program to be interrupted earlier on Wednesday evening.

The “Spiegel” authors wrote that the editorial team said that “the bottleneck is in the Munich program directorate”.

Furthermore, the question is formulated in the text under the heading "Conditionally broadcastable": "Does ARD have a live problem?"

Herres said that after the first reports from Washington, he and Bornheim had arranged a fade-in (so-called crawl) in the current feature film and the "Tagesthemen extra" at 9.45pm.

Because of the uncertain situation in Washington, ARD was currently only ready to broadcast on Das Erste from 11 p.m., Herres said: “The film was then canceled at 11 p.m. and switched directly to the US capital in the early 'daily topics'.”

ARD and ZDF were accused in the social networks of reacting too late to the events in Washington on Wednesday evening and reporting too little about the violent intrusion of Trump supporters into the building of the US Congress.

A tweet from “Heute Journal” presenter Claus Kleber, who recommended that viewers watch “immediately” the US news broadcaster CNN: “Incredible scenes in the US #Capitol, caused displeasure and a lot of ridicule.

Turn on #CNN.

Right away".

With the journalist Ulrich Deppendorf, 70, a former editor-in-chief of the ARD capital studio reported on Twitter.

He criticizes: “In Washington there is an attack on US democracy and DAS ERSTE is broadcasting by Hans Albers!

I don't understand anymore.

Not even the ZDF. ”Directly below the posting, the ARD press office justified itself and referred, among other things, to the special edition of“ Tagesthemen ”.

The Albers film not only aroused Deppendorf, but in fact also many other viewers.

Some scoffed with reference to the burst fee increase of the radio license fee: “With the approved fee increase, ARD and ZDF would now broadcast live from Washington”, wrote about “Tagesspiegel” editor Robert Ide.

14 million viewers at the "Tagesschau"

Meanwhile, the ARD emphasizes that the coverage of the consequences of the storm on the Capitol on the following day met with great interest among the viewers.

According to this, 14.1 million viewers saw the “Tagesschau” on Thursday evening at 8 pm on Das Erste or in one of the other programs; the program thus achieved a total market share of 41.3 percent.
