The number of deaths in Germany in the week from December 7th to 13th was well above the average of previous years.

According to preliminary results, at least 22,897 people died in the 50th calendar week, which is 23 percent or 4,289 more than the average for the years 2016 to 2019, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Friday in Wiesbaden.

This emerges from a special evaluation of the provisional death rates, which are currently available up to the 50th calendar week.

The development is particularly noticeable in Saxony, which is severely affected by Corona.

In the 50th calendar week, the number there was 88 percent or 970 cases above the average of previous years, as the Federal Office announced.

An increase of 34 percent (211 cases) was reported from Brandenburg and 35 percent (204 cases) from Thuringia.

The number of confirmed Covid-19 deaths has increased significantly from week to week since the beginning of October - according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), there were 3595 cases in the 50th calendar week, 598 more than in the previous week.

In the 49th calendar week, the excess mortality was 18 percent.

The Federal Office said that shifts in the age structure of the population could also contribute to above-average death rates.

Measures to contain the pandemic could also ensure that fewer deaths are caused by other infectious diseases such as the flu.

The death rate could not provide any information about the frequency of individual causes of death.
