Live: Still restless outside of Capitol

in 7 days

Vice President Mike Pence has just reopened the meeting in the Senate.

The electoral count may begin soon.

Pence disapproves of Wednesday's violence, saying the stormers have not won and that violence will never win.

He ends his speech with, "Let's get to work now."

Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell says the government will not let itself be intimidated.

"We will carry out our duties under the constitution and for our nation. And we will do so tonight. We will carry out the message of the American voter. We have been doing that for four centuries, under any circumstance, including during a war and a civil war. is the clockwork of our democracy. "

“We have never been deterred in the past [from doing our job] and we will not let that happen now,” said McConnell, who continues to certify the election results.

With this, Biden is also officially proclaimed by Congress as the new president of the US.

Obama: 'Storming should not come as a surprise'

Democratic former president Barack Obama says we could have anticipated Wednesday's events for a long time, he said in a statement.

"For two months now, politicians and certain media have refused to tell the supporters [of the Republicans] the truth. (..) Their fantasies began to move further and further away from reality. We have now seen the consequences."

"Today comes in the history books as a moment of shame for our country," Obama said.

Former President Bill Clinton called the storm on Twitter "an attack on our constitution and our country."

According to Clinton, the storm is the result of "four years of poison policy that deliberately spread incorrect information" and thus turned the Americans against each other.

Today we faced an unprecedented assault on our Capitol, our Constitution, and our country. The assault was fueled by more than four years of poison politics spreading deliberate misinformation, sowing distrust in our system, and pitting Americans against one another.

Pelosi wants to return to the Capitol tonight

President of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi wants to return to the Capitol on Wednesday evening.

Her son-in-law and America correspondent Michiel Vos has just said this on NPO Radio 1. Shortly afterwards an official statement from her office followed.

According to Vos, this does not necessarily mean that the session can be resumed, but it has a symbolic value.

"The return means they want to show that they are not going to be bullied, but I think they are going symbolically back to the Capitol to show that they are back."

Vos says his mother-in-law has now been housed in a safe location.

Pelosi had to be evacuated after Trump supporters managed to enter the Capitol.

It is not yet known whether the count of electoral votes in the Senate will resume Wednesday evening.

Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell previously argued for this.

Social media remove Trump video

Facebook and YouTube have removed a video of Donald Trump, in which he says again that the election has been fraudulent and that the storming is a logical consequence.

In the same video, he also calls on the stormers to go home.

Guy Rosen, Facebook vice president of integrity, says the video is actually contributing to the violence taking place at the parliament building.

Twitter banned all retweeting of the video because it could potentially provoke violence.

Later, the social medium proceeded to delete the president's latest tweets.

Juliette van Duijn asks:

What effect could this protest have on the further course of the transfer of power?

Is there a good chance that the votes in Georgia will be recounted again?

Answer:

Apart from the chaos surrounding the Capitol, which obviously prevents MPs from resuming their work, the protest should have no further consequences for the electoral process.

Whether there will be a recount in Georgia has nothing to do with these events either.

Under the law in that state, they can be applied for by either candidate if the difference between them is 0.5 percentage points or less.

Local election officials can also request a recount if they have a concrete suspicion that mistakes have been made or fraud has taken place.
