More than 25,000 new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the past 24 hours, while the number of hospitalizations has decreased slightly, according to data released by Public Health France on Wednesday.

The number of confirmed cases was 25,379 against 20,489 the day before and 4,022 on Monday, after the weekend and New Year's Eve, when significantly fewer tests were carried out.

This daily figure has varied enormously since mid-December, fluctuating between some 3,000 and more than 21,000.

But still far, on average, from the government goal of going down to 5,000 cases per day.

A stable positivity rate

The positivity rate, which measures the percentage of people positive for Covid-19 out of all those tested, is the same as Tuesday (5.4%) against 5.2% on Sunday and Monday.

The number of hospitalized patients stands at 24,708, 163 less than Tuesday, with 1,438 new hospitalizations in 24 hours.

The number of patients in intensive care is 2,607, or 9 less than the day before, with 234 new admissions in 24 hours.

With 291 deaths in hospital (346 Tuesday, 380 Monday), the disease has now killed 66,565 people since the start of the epidemic, the health agency said.
