In 2020, the number of bikes on the roads exploded, reaching up to 27% outside of the two periods of confinement.

Over the whole of 2020, the association of communities Vélo & Territoires, estimates in a report that cycle use has increased by 10%.

Produced in conjunction with the Ministry of Ecological Transition, this first assessment - still provisional - is based on a national sample of 182 representative meters.

The increase in the number of passages is 12% over the year in urban areas, and 2% in rural areas, with a drop of 1% in suburban areas, according to Vélo & Territoires.

More and more bikes in the city

Containment periods excluded, "the new impetus given to cycling benefits all environments", welcomes the association, with + 31% of passages in urban areas, + 14% in peri-urban areas and + 15% in rural areas.

"The year 2020 will have been the year of the great boom in cycling in France", she notes, explaining that "two factors particularly encouraged the French to use the bicycle: transport strikes and the health crisis ”.
