The fight against pet abandonment continues.

From now on, it will be compulsory to identify a cat born after January 1, 2012. The animal can be tattooed or equipped with an electronic chip, reports

Le Figaro

.

The information has been confirmed by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Failure to identify a cat born after 2012 will be considered a fourth class fine.

The owner of the animal could therefore be sanctioned with a fine of 750 euros.

Abandonment sanctioned as an "act of cruelty"

Until now, the obligation to identify a cat only applied in the event of the sale or donation of a feline older than seven months.

Many animals therefore went “under the radar”.

In January 2020, the Ministry of Agriculture Didier Guillaume had already announced its intention to sanction any failure to identify an animal, specifies

L'Union

.

The fine was then to be 135 euros.

The measurement is not trivial: in the event of loss, an identified animal has an 80% chance of being found.

It is also a way of better sanctioning irresponsible owners, abandonment being considered an act of cruelty and punishable by two years in prison and a fine of 30,000 euros.

Each year, according to the SPA, nearly 100,000 dogs and cats are abandoned in France.
