Around 85 percent of all adults

who were born

in

Bavaria

also currently live there.

This means that the Free State takes the top position among all federal states, as the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) announced in Wiesbaden on Tuesday.

The large states of

Baden-Württemberg

(83 percent) and

North Rhine-Westphalia

(82 percent)

follow on the other places

.

By contrast, of all adults born in the city-states of

Bremen

and

Hamburg

, only about half live there, according to BiB.

In

Lower Saxony

it is over 70 percent.

The regional differences are related to the size of the federal state, as the institute explains: "Since most moves are only carried out over short distances, many people in large countries move within their own state."

Relocation in East Germany is higher than in the West

On the other hand, it is also a sign of economic differences when people move to other regions in search of training opportunities and jobs.

According to the Wiesbaden Institute, for example, the proportion of those who moved away from their state of birth is higher in eastern Germany than in the west.
