The Director of the Nama Foundation, Reem bin Karam, confirmed that strategic partnerships with international cultural and artistic institutions contribute to supporting and developing the handicraft sector in the UAE, given the important opportunities it provides to explore new horizons to enhance the authentic Emirati handicrafts sector, noting that these partnerships It provides a stimulating environment for creativity and innovation in the field of design, in line with the vision of the “Irthy” council, affiliated to the “Nama” organization, and its objectives aimed at enabling women working in the field of crafts to develop their skills and find new markets for their products.

The "Heritage" Council for Contemporary Crafts announced the most prominent efforts and events that it recently organized to publicize its vision towards empowering craftswomen in the Emirates and presenting the products of local traditional crafts to the world, as it held a series of sessions and cooperation agreements with two of the major design platforms in the world, embodied in Platform and magazine «Design» specialized in architecture and design, and the company «Design Miami» for global design.

Reem bin Karam added, “The participation of the (Heritage) Council in organizing a number of events comes within the framework of its vision and endeavors to encourage creative projects and initiatives that support the participation and empowerment of craftswomen in the region, and to provide opportunities for the exchange of experiences and knowledge with international designers and creators, and open doors for effective cooperation to restore Presenting traditional handicrafts in a contemporary form, and adapting them to meet the challenges of globalization.

The council’s cooperation with the platform and magazine Dezeen included displaying its innovative products, which combined traditional Emirati crafts such as tali and sifah, and a number of international crafts, through the magazine’s website, which attracts more than three million visitors a month from all over the world.

Dialogue session

The Council organized a virtual dialogue session on the platform of “Dizen” entitled “The Role of Contemporary Design in Protecting Local Crafts and Empowering Craftsmen”, moderated by the chief editor of “Dizen”, Marcus Fieres. His Highness, Ruler of Sharjah, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Muhammad Al Qasimi, Founder and Honorary Chair of the Legacy Council.

Three designers who contributed to the design and implementation of the “My Heritage” product range participated in the session. They are Faisal Tabbara, a founding partner in “Architecture and Other Things”, and Abdullah Al Mulla, an architect and founder of MULA Studio, in addition to Emirati jewelery designer Alia Bin Omair, during which they talked about their experience. Working with Majlis craftswomen, and the importance of developing traditional crafts, by introducing new and contemporary elements and designs.

As part of its partnership with "Design Miami" for the global design, the Council displayed its handcraft products for the first time on the company's electronic sales platform, which includes an exclusive group of handmade products created by a group of international craftsmen, designers and artists.

In line with its vision of preserving the artisanal heritage in the Middle East, North Africa, Southeast Asia and Central Asia, the "My Heritage" council organized an inspiring dialogue session, in cooperation with "Design Miami", entitled "Revitalizing Beirut through Heritage Preservation", in which a number of Lebanese artists participated. And it aimed to shed light on the advantages of the cultural heritage in Beirut, and the importance of preserving and protecting it.

Participants also reviewed ways to employ handicrafts and design and architecture practices to enhance environmental, social and economic sustainability, especially in the context of rebuilding and renewing buildings damaged by the explosion, which shook the city last August.

The session was attended by architect Bernard Khoury and designer Nada Debs, along with Tessa and Tara Sakhi from Studio Te Sakhi in Beirut, during which they discussed their own experiences and visions about the reality of crafts and design, and their role in promoting the creative scene in Beirut.
