Selected research object for more than a year

None of the 150 "little fat guys" were thin

When taking pictures of graduation from elementary school, the photographer had to cut the back of the clothes because he was obese and couldn't wear school uniforms, so he barely “wore” them.

Recently, a 12-year-old boy from Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, has experienced frequent “screening”: After being stimulated by this, he gritted his teeth to lose weight and lost 15 kilograms in two months.

How hard is it to lose weight?

In a research on obese children in Wuhan Children's Hospital, among the 150 "little fat guys" who were selected for the study in 2019, none of them have been thin, and they are still moderately to severely obese children.

Obesity in children and adolescents has become an "epidemic" of the whole society. A report released not long ago showed that nearly 20% of children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 17 are overweight and obese.

In this regard, experts call for parents to help their children carry out long-term weight management and stay away from obesity.

Child obesity has quietly affected health

In order to study the changes in the gut microbes of obese children, at the beginning of 2019, Wuhan Children's Hospital selected 150 moderate to severe obesity children from 3,600 students in a certain elementary school, and tracked their physical conditions.

"The project has been underway for the past two years, and these 150 children are'a decline'. The'Little Pangdun' from 2019 to this year is still a'Little Pangdun', which is still within our research scope." Recently, Li Ruizhen, director of the child health department of the hospital The reporter told the Changjiang Daily that when the children came to the hospital for examination, they were all white and fat, with chubby faces and round arms and legs. They looked cute, but they were also worrying: obesity buried health in children. Hidden dangers.

What impressed Li Ruizhen most was Zhou Yu (pseudonym), a fourth-grade boy: 9 years and 8 months, 1.52 meters tall, 67.8 kg weight, and a BMI index of 29.3.

Estimated by age, the BMI index of a 10-year-old boy should be within 20. He is already severely overweight.

The results of Zhou Yu’s blood biochemical examination showed that a number of indicators exceeded the limit: the normal range of alanine aminotransferase indicators for liver function was 9-60, Zhou Yu reached 278; the insulin indicators related to diabetes, the normal value was 25, Zhou Yu It is 79.24; his triglyceride index is also stuck in the upper limit of the normal range.

At a young age, it was because of obesity that he rubbed shoulders with high blood sugar, high blood lipids and other "senile diseases". Zhou Yu's situation is not a single case.

In the past two months, the hospital took blood samples from this group of "little fattons" in batches for examination. More than half of these children had one or more indicators exceeding the standard.

Because of my young age and unobvious symptoms, I do not need to be hospitalized for the time being, but this is also a wake-up call for parents and children: obesity has quietly affected health, so I must lose weight quickly.

Abdominal fat is too thick and the puncture sleeve is not long enough

Obesity in children and adolescents has become an "epidemic" of concern to the whole society.

On December 23, 2020, the State Council Information Office held a press conference to introduce the "Report on Nutrition and Chronic Disease Status of Chinese Residents (2020)", which specifically mentioned the problem of obesity: Chinese adult residents are overweight and obese more than 50%, 6 to Nearly 20% of children and adolescents are 17 years old and 10% are children under 6 years old.

"There was almost no'overweight children' more than a decade ago, but now they are becoming more and more common." Yao Hui, chief physician of the Endocrinology Department of Wuhan Children's Hospital, recalled. In the past, parents thought that children were "thin" and "weak". Children eat more; now, more and more children come to the hospital to see obesity and consult to lose weight. During the peak period of children's medical treatment during the summer vacation, hundreds of "little fattons" are treated almost every year.

Obese children also pose challenges to routine diagnosis and treatment.

In 2018, the hospital performed laparoscopic surgery on a 12-year-old girl.

The child was only 1.5 meters tall and weighed up to 115 kg. The length of the puncture cannula used for the operation was about 10 cm. However, the girl’s abdominal fat was too thick, requiring at least 20 cm of surgical equipment.

The hospital had to urgently customize and lengthen the surgical equipment and transport it to Han by air to successfully complete the operation.

Why are there more and more "little fat guys"?

According to Yao Hui's analysis, most of the obese children admitted are physiologically obese after eating, which is related to changes in lifestyle.

Now the material conditions are good. Children often eat meat and fried foods, often drink beverages, and often stay at home doing homework, watching TV, and playing on the computer. They rarely do outdoor activities.

If you can’t keep your mouth shut, you can’t move your legs, the calories you take in are greater than the calories you consume, and your body naturally accumulates too much fat.

Obesity may affect height in adulthood

Citizen Ms. Liu's son is also a "little fat man". At the age of 10, he was 1.38 meters tall and weighed almost 50 kilograms. When seeing a doctor, the doctor reminded him of excessive abdominal fat and recommended weight loss.

This proposal was quickly rejected by the child's grandmother: the child is healthy and still developing, so there is no need to lose weight.

"Child obesity has a lot to do with parents' perceptions." Li Ruizhen said. When conducting research on the subject, parents of obese children communicated with their children's health problems. Most of the parents were calm: children who are too obese do have health risks, but There is no need to deliberately control, adolescence will "scratch" and naturally lose weight.

Can obese children really lose weight naturally during puberty?

Not necessarily.

Due to the interference of hormones, some children who were not obese may suddenly gain weight by puberty.

For children who are obese during childhood, obesity may also make them puberty earlier, affecting their height in adulthood, and they need to control their weight in time.

In addition, 80% of childhood obesity will extend to adult obesity, increasing the difficulty of losing weight.

"Parents should help their children carry out long-term weight management." Li Ruizhen suggested that parents should pay attention to the problem of children’s obesity, adjust their children’s dietary structure, eat as lightly as possible on the premise of ensuring rich nutrition, and increase moderate exercise to keep their weight healthy. The figure returns to normal.
