It took a while, but Wham!

is finally at the top of the charts with

Last Christmas

, his

Christmas

hit

released… thirty-six years ago!

The song was streamed 9.2 million times over the past week, allowing this 1984 classic to reach the top spot in Britain for the first time.

A deserved success, as the song has been affiliated with the holiday spirit since its release.

Andrew Ridgeley, who founded Wham!

with George Michael, told the BBC to be "delighted".

"Thirty-six years after the release, it is perhaps more a testament to his timeless charm, a necessary recognition of the talent of George, of which he would have been immensely proud," he added.

George Michael passed away on Christmas Day, 2016. To celebrate the first anniversary of his death, fans of the singer tried to push the song to the top of the charts at Christmas 2017, to no avail, beaten by

Ed Sheeran's

Children's room

George Michael had written

Last Christmas

, while watching a football match in his childhood bedroom, at his parents' house in Hertfordshire.

"We had a bite to eat, and we were together, watching TV, when, without us realizing it, George had been missing upstairs for about an hour.

When he came back down he was excited like a chip, like he had found gold… which he was!

We went to his room, where we spent hours as kids, playing jingles, and he played the beginning of the song for me.

It was an incredible moment ”, testifies Andrew Ridgeley in his memoirs, published in 2017.

The duo will quickly record the song, which will be an immediate hit.

Generous, they will choose to donate the royalties from

Last Christmas

to humanitarian aid for the famine in Ethiopia.

Thirty-six years later, this good deed has finally been rewarded!
