The Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has criticized the EU's strategy for vaccine procurement.

He was "not satisfied with the speed" when buying the vaccine doses, Orbán said on Sunday on the Hungarian state radio.

The head of government, who is already in a constant dispute with Brussels because of questions of the rule of law, now wants to look "east" because of the vaccine.

There were also vaccines from the EU that were previously available elsewhere, such as Canada, the UK and Israel, Orbán said.

“But that's the job of Brussels, they take care of it.” Hungary, on the other hand, also takes care of “relations with the East, since Brussels doesn't do this”.

It was better to stand on two legs, Orbán said.

After Hungary received 6,000 doses of the Russian corona vaccine at the end of December, Orbán dampened hopes for a mass vaccination with the substance called Sputnik V in Hungary.

"We know the Russian vaccine is good, but there is and probably won't be enough of it," Orbán said, referring to production bottlenecks.

The Chinese vaccine is more promising than the Russian one.

“It seems that this is available sooner and in greater quantities,” Orbán explained.
