Despite the lockdown, the Second German Television held its annual New Year's Eve show in front of the Brandenburg Gate on Thursday evening - but without an audience in front of the stage.

The show with Andrea Kiewel and Johannes B. Kerner was watched on TV by an average of 3.58 million people.

Some of them discovered a sign reading “Maskenfrei” in the area behind the stage while panning the camera.

A Twitter user posted a photo of it.

He wrote: "By the way, the mask is NOT wanted at the ZDF New Year's Eve party!"

A ZDF spokesman told “Bild” on Saturday: “There were separate areas on the production site in which the participants had the opportunity to temporarily remove or change their masks.” This is part of the officially approved Corona concept.
