In times of distress, the references that we are always looking for to understand what is happening gush out.

We hunt them on the fly, out of the blue, to establish a connection between what is and what was.

And if not, why listening to an interview with Carlos Cano's son, Pablo, presenting an anthology of his father, can one remember that politics has once again failed to measure up in this difficult year that has finish?

Pablo Cano spoke in a radio station of

Viva Carlos Cano

, a double CD in which several artists collaborate and which includes a detailed biography written by Juanjo Téllez.

His son claimed the Andalusian singer-songwriter on the twentieth anniversary of his death and his memory was present when he listened to the umpteenth political controversy about the management of the pandemic.

It was a phrase that left me recorded in an interview:

"It's a shame that honesty is a risk factor"

.

I looked for her and no, she didn't tell me, she told Ignacio Camacho in this same newspaper.

It doesn't matter, because there are people who mark you and make all their songs or all their words your own.

Carlos Cano had beaten me when he grabbed my arm, took me out of the hotel and told me: "What a wonderful day, we are going to do the interview in a park."

I had only seen him on stage, and in two minutes he was removing wool balls from my sweater - "it's that it makes you balls" - while verbose he asked more than he answered about journalism, about politics, about life in Madrid ... In his songs, he mixed poetry with deep criticism, because "in the end what must be left in the heart is the trace of beauty."

A rebel, who was not a revolutionary, as it was proclaimed, he lamented having gone "from the darkness of dictatorship to the stick of democracy" and accused the politicians of the time of having invented modernity to mask its uselessness.

Also in my tape recorder, and in my head, he left this definitive, useful and recurring reflection for when the nationalists harass:

«Andalusia has nothing to do with exclusive nationalisms because in Andalusia we have more universal ethical values»

.

Although Carlos Cano stopped singing it, the

Green and White is my flag

, part of the recent history of Andalusia, is missing in the anthology.

Pablo was very young when his father died and he has insisted that his memory is not diluted.

He, however, already warned when his heart gave him the first warning: "I will die alive."

And there it continues.
