It was difficult this year to enjoy a good movie while sitting in a red armchair.

And for good reason, the coronavirus epidemic has forced cinemas to close almost half of the year 2020. This is now reflected in the attendance figures of theaters which plunge with a drop of 69.4% compared to 2019 . 

The year is coming to an end and it is time to take stock for the cinemas.

Just like other places of culture, they have been closed almost half of the year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

And inevitably, the figures for cinema attendance in 2020 are very bad.

The drop is colossal: less 69.4% compared to last year!

According to CNC figures, cinemas recorded 65 million admissions, against more than 210 million in 2019. Obviously the fault is the pandemic which has forced theaters to close for 162 days this year.

Continuously postponed exits

It has also forced certain large productions to postpone their release, such as the third volume of OSS 117 entitled

Red Alert in Black Africa

, Kaamelot or the new James Bond with the premonitory title:

Dying can wait

There is still a small consolation for French cinema: films made in France have achieved more admissions than American productions.

This had not happened for 14 years.
