The "Napo" Union for the Protection of Nature in Germany announced the awarding of the "A26 East" highway, to be built on the port of Hamburg in the north of the country, the "Dinosaur Year 2020" award for its negative impact on the environment.

The federation explained the reason for choosing this road because it is "a symbol of a wrong transport policy, in addition to being a symbol of outdated infrastructure layouts all over Germany."

"We want to stop planning," said Union President Joerg-Andreas Krueger, noting that the project, which aims to connect two other highways to establish a transport network in the port, would close and destroy swamp lands, which are lands that store a large amount of carbon dioxide.

Kruger said that the project is no longer up to date with the closure of the Morburg nuclear plant, and the reduction of expectations for the movement of loading and unloading at the port.

It is expected that the length of the road that will link the two highways (A1) and (A7) will be 10 kilometers.

Kruger confirmed that this is the first time that the Dinosaur of the Year award is not given to a person but to a project. It was previously awarded to the former German Finance Minister, Theo Weigel, and to the CEO of the RWE Energy Company, Rolf Martin Schmitz.
