The president of the French Council of Muslim Worship (CFCM) this Tuesday regretted the decision according to him "unilateral and unexplained" of the great Mosque of Paris (GMP) to withdraw from the project of the National Council of Imams (CNI).

On Monday, the rector of the Grand Mosque, Chems-Eddine Hafiz, announced his desire "to no longer participate in the meetings which aim to implement the project of the National Council of Imams and to freeze all contacts with the whole of the Islamist component of the CFCM ”.

The National Council of Imams (CNI) is a project pushed by the Elysée to allow their training in France to be certified, within the framework of the bill against radical Islam and "separatism".

Tensions around a draft charter

The great Mosque of Paris in particular accused certain federations of the CFCM of blocking negotiations in the writing of a "charter of republican values" which was to be returned to the government in early December.

"Members of the Islamist movement" made believe "that this charter had for ambition to touch the dignity of the faithful Muslims", accused Chems-Eddine Hafiz, denouncing a "shameless lie".

"An astonishing conclusion and completely detached from reality", according to Mohammed Moussaoui, who assured that "everything was going normally".

The CFCM denies the version of the rector of the great Mosque of Paris

The president of the CFCM said in a press release that "the latest version of the charter obtained the approval of all the federations, including that of the great Mosque of Paris" on December 15, 2020 and that the various federations had to " solemnly confirm in writing before December 30, 2020 their adherence to the final text ”.

According to him, "no modification" has been made to the text since its validation on December 15.

Mohammed Moussaoui called "to immediately install the National Council of Imams and to endow it with the means necessary for the accomplishment of its mission" while assuring that he wished that the great Mosque of Paris "can continue to work with its partners of the CFCM ”.

The CNI must issue an authorization to imams based on their knowledge and their commitment to respect a code of ethics.
