The infant often goes through a difficult period where he has colic and for the parents, it is then very difficult to sleep.

Doctor Jimmy Mohamed gives in the program "Sans Rendez-vous" on Europe 1 his advice to recognize this discomfort which affects babies but also techniques to relieve it.

When babies cry a lot, a worry arises in the minds of parents: what if my child has colic?

To find out if he suffers from it and improve the well-being of the infant, doctor Jimmy Mohamed gives his advice as every day in the program

Repeated crying, a sign ...

“Infant colic is recognizable because babies cry. And there's one rule that's worth what it's worth: cry three hours a day, three days a week, and for at least three weeks. your baby cries for 1h30 or 2h a day, he can also meet these criteria. These babies who have colic are nevertheless rather well: they are putting on weight correctly, they eat well. But they are inconsolable.

While this discomfort can sometimes distress parents, it is still unclear whether babies are in pain.

The word colic comes from the Latin colicus which means "who suffers from the colon".

Except that we have no proof, on the one hand, that these babies are in pain and on the other hand, that the pain comes from the digestive tract.

This is just a guess and maybe we're a long way off.

... but some children cry more than others

Recently, researchers have performed MRI scans on babies born at term between the first and sixth day.

During the MRI, they made them inhale three scents: rotten cabbage, banana and eucalyptus.

They then followed the children for several weeks and interviewed the parents.

As a result, some children cry more than others.

These are the ones that have been most susceptible to rotten cabbage breathing.

Why ?

The areas that have activated in their brain, the pyriform cortex and the insula, are also responsible for pain control and self-regulation.

So babies who cry do so based on a higher or lower pain threshold.

Above all, they will have difficulty regulating themselves and calming down, which is why they will tend to get carried away and cry for many hours.

How to calm infant colic?

You must first calm down yourself.

Sometimes we are overwhelmed by these tears at 3 or 4 in the morning.

In these cases, you have to put the baby in his bed, in another room and close the door.

He might cry for half an hour, whatever.

Parents need to reset the counters to zero in order to be able to take good care of their child afterwards.

If you want to relieve your child from colic, there is a solution that would be to wear it.

We realized that babies carried, especially in Africa where they are often put on the backs of mothers, had less colic.

Then, do not hesitate to massage them because they probably have a stomach ache.

Finally, there are also small herbal teas, available in pharmacies, sometimes based on fennel, which can calm children's pain.

But the only treatment is to be patient because it improves spontaneously around the age of 3 or 4 months. "
