After the rush of visitors to some German winter sports areas over Christmas, the authorities fear a new wave of day trippers on New Year's Eve.

North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) appealed on Tuesday with a view to the corona pandemic to citizens not to take short trips to Winterberg in the Sauerland.

"Large crowds increase the risk of the pandemic spreading further," he warned.

"My appeal is therefore: stay at home!" The state supports Winterberg in all measures to keep other day tourists from arriving, Laschet told the German press agency.

"We are ready to send more emergency services at short notice." Violations of corona rules would be punished consistently.

This is mainly about tobogganing, walking and hiking, because ski lifts have been shut down because of the measures against the pandemic.

Nevertheless, numerous day trippers had already made their way to Winterberg on Tuesday morning.

Day visitors had already caused traffic chaos on Sunday and Monday with overcrowded parking spaces and miles of traffic jams.

It was similar in the Ore Mountains, the Hunsruck and the Eifel.
