WORLD:

Will this pandemic be a milestone in history?

Yuval Noah Harari:

In itself, Covid-19 is still comparatively mild.

It has a low death rate.

The black plague in the Middle Ages was definitely worse, killing between a quarter and half of the population in Europe and Asia.

The 1918 and 1919 flu pandemic was also worse, killing up to five percent of the population in some countries.

WORLD:

You speak of the Spanish flu.

Harari:

I hate to use this term.

As a neutral country, Spain had a much freer press amid all the censorship during World War I, so it was always cited as a source.
